ENG 101: Pam Lange – NFCI class
NFCI Research Essay 4: Compare & Contrast Directions ENG 101 TR
The objective of this essay is to demonstrate your understanding of compare and contrast writing using the point-by-point method of development (refer to pages 206-208 in textbook). As a culinary graduate, you will be comparing and contrasting throughout your culinary career.
Your research essay is a key part of your grade for this course. As the research essay requires more writing, research, and documentation than the shorter essays, it is only fair that it is appropriately scored. Therefore, your research essay will count for 200 points.
The research essay will be 5-7 pages in length, excluding the Works Cited page. Use your textbook, Hacker book, or OWL for MLA guidelines. The required research for this project is TWO SCHOLARLY ARTICLES and THREE OTHER SOURCES (minimum of five sources), though you will probably read more than that to find your focus and perspective. To meet this goal, please allow enough time to think through your topic, borrow through the inter-library loan system, work carefully on revising, and finally, thoroughly proofread your writing.
You will be embedding (introducing every quote), citing, discussing and explaining quotes, and utilizing appropriate data from these five sources to support your argument throughout your whole paper.
Pick a topic from these suggestions: Compare and Contrast one of the following:
-
- Two Culinary Awards
- Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Culinary World
- Earning a College Degree from NFCI
- Beer Regulations of the US and Germany
- Two Chefs
- Food regulations of the US and another country
- Cooking shows
- CA versus NY state wines
- Your choice (must be approved by me)
GRADING CHECKLIST:
Each essay in this course has a grading checklist for you to look at BEFORE you turn in your first draft. The grading checklist lists the components that I will use to grade your essay.
NOTES:
- The thesis statement will be the last sentence in your first (introduction) paragraph.
- In your thesis statement, you will need to state three specific points of comparison between your topic and then consistently develop these points of comparison throughout the essay.
- Start each body paragraph with a topic sentence that mentions your thesis point and how it relates to the topic.
- Be sure you emphasize the purpose of your comparison for your reader throughout the essay.
- To be certain your essay is focused, logically organized, and fully developed, write your first draft based on a detailed outline using your graphic organizer in the online journal entry #8 (J8), and class discussions. Anticipate that the outline and essay will evolve as you revise.
