A guide to making, finding and using zines.

A collection of about 30 zines, booklets printed on varied colors (white, cream, yellow, red, blue) with mostly black ink. Some text is handwritten and some covers feature images. Legible titles include "May the force be with you, Astrology, and Clara Dixon: Poet-printer of early American anarchism.

What are zines?

Zines (pronounced "zeen") can be difficult to define, but are generally:

  • Self-published booklets or mini-magazines
  • Amateur, DIY, or handmade quality
  • Low circulation (fewer than 1,000 copies made)
  • Noncommercial
  • Content is often based on personal experiences or specialized subject matter
  • Made with low-cost or found materials (collage), and typically, a photocopier
  • Sold at a low price or given for free
