Faculty and Staff Services: Instruction

A guide about the services provided by the Lewis Library to SUNY Niagara Faculty and Staff.

Instruction Sessions

The librarians at SUNY Niagara offer practical assistance to students, helping them master research, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that enrich every aspect of their lives.

We offer instruction to individuals or groups upon request by any faculty member. We can teach in your classroom, the library classroom, via Zoom, or through asynchronous methods such as video tutorials and library guides.

We offer mini-instruction sessions on a particular database or citation style, or we can teach for a full class session. We can embed in your Brightspace course for a supportive, interactive experience for students.

Topics that can be covered during instruction sessions include:

  • Tour of the library
  • Searching the library catalog for books & print items
  • Utilizing the discovery service to search for items in SUNY Niagara and through SUNY
  • Searching individual databases
  • How to analyze and evaluate sources
  • Formulating search strategies
  • Ordering interlibrary loans
  • Citation help
  • Advanced internet searching and web evaluation strategies
  • We are open to other requests too! Please explain on the form.

Best Practices for Faculty

  • Instruction works best when paired with an assignment since the students have a vested interest.
  • Please send us your research assignments. Librarians at SUNY Niagara tailor instruction to the specific course assignments of your class.
  • We are happy to help you incorporate library research into your assignments.
  • Book early in the semester to guarantee your preferred dates and times.
  • Library guides can be incorporated into your Brightspace classes.

Reference Desk - Ask A Librarian

If you have any questions, need research assistance for you or a student in your classes, a Librarian is available at our Reference Desk. During library hours we're available in-person, by phone, email and through our Chat with a Librarian Service. If you reach out to us after library hours and you use the "Ask Us 24/7" chat, a librarian from another institution will assist you.
